On Holy Shit (Part II)

24-21, BC over Wake Forest.

Yesterday, I would’ve told you this is as expected.  After how the game transpired today, this is another “Holy Shit I Can’t Believe They Pulled It Off” game.

Which victory was more unlikely?  BC’s come from behind victory at Virginia Tech last year that required two touchdowns and an onside kick in the two minutes or so or a touchdown drive from the 30 against a tough Wake Forest defense by a backup quarterback playing in his third game of the season accounting for only 34 yards passing for an offense which produced only 18 yards in the second half.

I had hope in the V-Tech game; I had given up on this one.

The offense went absolutely nowhere in the second half until that last drive.  The only contributions to the game by Dominique Davis were his two fumbles deep in BC territory returned for a pair of touchdowns.  There wasn’t a single play by Davis in the whole game that suggested he had a comeback victory in him or the feeling that, like with Ryan last year, the offense had the break through sometime.

Until… a 3rd and 13, on the 45, in a four down territory with clock ticking.  Davis goes long and hits Rich Gunnell for a 35 yard completion at the 20.  That wasn’t just Davis’ longest completion; it doubled the yards he had passed for.  Two plays later, he hits Robinson for a 20 yard completion to the 1.

Two big completions out of nowhere, keeping BC’s hopes for the ACC championship alive, making people forget his two fumbles, and allowing me to plan a trip up to Boston next week.

Utterly shocking turnaround in what would have been a devastating loss.

Snatching victory from jaws of defeat.

Sounds familiar?

Yeah, Coach Jags has done it twice.

P.S.  Congrats on FSU’s Rolle for earning the Rhodes scholarship.  Excellent job.

P.P.S.  I feel terrible for the tragic ending to Crane’s one and only season as a starter.  Sure I called for his benching, but I’d wanted to lose his job because of his performance, not because of injuries.  Besides, he was beginning to manage the offense well after the playbook was retooled for him.  Having watched Davis, it’s gotta be conceded Crane was probably the better choice over Davis.  No way the offense goes that flat with Crane in charge (indeed, until that last drive, Crane in his one quarter + time had more yardage than Davis).

I agree, this was a huge surprise. I almost shut the game off last night, except I remembered last year when I shut off the VT game.

But, I have to question the offensive playcalling in this game. After Crane got hurt, we just refused to throw the ball until we were forced to do so. From what I saw of Davis, he was a pretty accurate passer. When Wake started keying on the run, we should have at least run some dump-off/screen plays instead of repeatedly running our heads into the wall.

But we will need some big help next week. I mean, we just barely won a game in which we basically gave up zero points to the other team’s offense.

I swear, if I have ever seen a game that would make someone yearn to have their mediocre quarterback again, this is it.

Yeah, the play calling puzzled me too at first (and now too, since you reminded me). Initially, I was like, why aren’t they passing more? I thought maybe Logan didn’t have confidence in Davis’ ability to get rid of the ball (good reasons to suspect that), so after a while, I just got used to the play calling without passes that went nowhere, but the last drive showed that Davis can pas long. So why not? (But I do remember also thinking Wake covered what little side passes we did throw).

I’m going up to see the game this week, and I suspect the game plan will be adjusted for Davis.

You know, your last sentences summarizes my feelings exactly.

Have fun at the game tomorrow. Maryland looked really bad in their last game, so maybe we have a chance.

    Enjoy I did!
